Yolanda in the Land of Students: disseminate the memory
"Yolanda in the Land of Students": Spreading the memory.
Yolanda Gonzalez Martin was my classmate for seven years. We shared classroom, games and adventures during our childhood and adolescence. When we found out about her assassination it was a heavy blow for her friends and fellow students.
She had finished her sixth form/twelfth grade studies and had gone to live in Madrid. The next year she was assassinated. Evil beasts cut short her life in February 1980. She was only a child with a zest for life and great hopes to change the world.
Thirty-five years have passed since her cruel assassination but we have never forgotten her. She will always be in our hearts. This documentary intends to be a homage to her and her family and friends and to all the people who were murdered in the misnamed "transition". Hundreds of mainly young people, were murdered for fighting for a better world.
It is of vital importance that the figure of Yolanda should not be forgotten. By remembering Yolanda we remember the hundreds of youngsters who were murdered in those convulsive times.
History of a Murder
Yolanda was the representative of her centre in the student coordinating committee set up in October 1979 a few months before her assassination. Her assassins Emilio Hellín and Ignacio Abad belonged to the Batallón Vasco Español (Spanish Basque Battalion), an extreme right wing group definitively linked to the extreme right wing party Fuerza Nueva led by the recently deceased Blas Piñar.
As the months passed the student actions were gaining momentum. Yolanda was highly respected in the coordinating committee; she had great ability for organization and mobilization. Besides, she was Basque. In an attempt to justify the unjustifiable they accused her of being a member of the armed group E.T.A. Nothing could be further from the truth. It was a cruel act of revenge in which State institutions were also implicated.
They tried to sow panic among the students in order to stop the mobilizations. With Yolanda they used the so-called “paseíllo” (a term taken from bull fighting meaning the ceremonial entry of bullfighters), an action not carried out since the Spanish Civil War. They went to her house and at gunpoint took her away and forced her into a car.
Her assassin Emilio Hellín Moro has always enjoyed privileged treatment. In 1987 during a prison leave he managed to escape to Paraguay where he was protected by the dictator Alfredo Stroessner. Three years later he was discovered by the magazine Interviú and extradited to Spain. In 1995 he was released from prison and changed his identity.
On February 24th 2013 the journalist José María Irujo published an excellent article in El País about the dark life of this ex-convict.
From that moment mobilizations sprang up demanding the accountability of various ministers. Emilio Hellín went back to collaborating with the state apparatus and even participating in judicial cases.
Today Yolanda would be 53. No, we haven’t forgotten her and we never will. The 1st of February 2015 will mark the 35th anniversary of her assassination. She will always be in our hearts.
The Documentary and the Crowdfunding Campaign
The documentary "Yolanda en el país de lxs estudiantes" (“Yolanda in the Land of Students”), was completed in 2013 and selected for the 55th edition of Zinebi, the Bilbao Festival of Short and Documentary Films. Since it began to be shown in November 2013 it has been projected in various places in Spain and we are conscious of the need to go on with its circulation through public presentations without forgetting its presence in education centres and international film festivals.
The documentary was completely self-financed and we certainly don’t want it to end up with limited diffusion and be ultimately forgotten, after all the work we have put in with few resources but a great deal of affection and illusion. Until now I have carried out the filming and distribution at my own cost but for lack of financial resources I find it impossible to continue with this work.
With this campaign we want to translate and subtitle the documentary into English and also to subtitle it in Basque which will give us the opportunity to present it in institutions and universities.
We also want to develop teaching units in Basque for teachers and pupils alike in which through the figure of Yolanda we can work on the true story of the misnamed democratic transition. We are aware that, with obvious exceptions, young people do not know this part of history or have a completely distorted view of it.
We do not want such atrocities to be forgotten and young people should know about them to be aware of what happened and to avoid the possibility of them happening again.
Besides, in our opinion, it is very important that this story be known in more countries so we will be carrying out an efficient distribution campaign for its showing in international film festivals.
