PALESTINE, A MODERN HISTORY. A Spanish edition for a forgotten seminal book

PALESTINE, A MODERN HISTORY. A Spanish edition for a forgotten seminal book

On December 6, 1981, at the age of 42, Palestinian professor Abdul Wahab Kayyali was murdered in his office in Beirut by unidentified gunmen. Kayyali was born in Jaffa, a Palestinian city that was ethnically cleansed in 1948 by Zionists militias; a 90 per cent of its Palestinians residents were expelled, including Kayyali himself and his family. As a refugee in Lebanon, Kayyali became a writer, an scholar and an activist within the Palestine liberation movement. It was also here, in Lebanon, where his book Palestine, a Modern History was firstly published. This book became his most important work and one of the best researches ever written on the impact of the pre-State Zionism on the Arab native community living in the area.

WHO WE ARE

My name is Sergio Pérez, one of the founders of this platform. I am also running a tiny publishing house, Bósforo Libros, based in Madrid and focusing in the Question of Palestine from an anticolonial perspective.

Among the books released in these six years, there are Spanish editions for some important works:

La expulsión de los palestinos [The Expulsion of the Palestinians] by Palestinian professor Nur Masalha, a capital book for understanding the extent of the concept of ‘transfer’ (that is, ethnic cleansing) in Zionist political thought and praxis before 1948;

Sionismo y fascismo [Zionism in the Age of Dictators] by American historian Lenni Brenner, a seminal work on the relationship and affinities between Zionist political movement and interwar European Fascisms;

El conflicto árabe-israelí: una visión no estatolátrica by Spanish professor José Durán Velasco, in our view one of the best books ever written on the nature of Zionism and the consequences of its inception and development within the Arab world heartland;

Gaza. Seguimos siendo humanos [Gaza. We Stay Human], on the Israeli Operation Cast Lead that devastated the Gaza Strip, a witness (and victim) account by the late Italian activist Vittorio Arrigoni, who was murdered in that same land in 2011.

These last two titles are posted for free (in Spanish) in our website, www.bosforolibros.com

For more info on how Bósforo Libros was born and why, how it is sustained and what its vision is, you may have a look to the following interview (in Spanish): http://www.rebelion.org/noticia.php?id=110373

THE PROJECT

Due to our perennial lack of money, our pace of publication in these six years has been extremely low, being last two years specially difficult. Bósforo Libros does not belong to any publishing group, nor big nor small, and it does not depend on any institution to be sustained. This means a total freedom for building our catalogue, but also means growing difficulties to keep publishing.

Therefore, if you think our project on Palestine is worth it, we appeal to you for helping us to publish our next book, which would be Palestine, a Modern History,the masterwork by Abdul Wahab Kayyali whose Spanish rights we have just purchased.

With this book we would like to emphasize two elements that we consider to be especially important; firstly, we want to give more voice to the Palestinian historians, who too frequently have seen how their very own history as a people has been marginalized and told by non-Palestinian voices.

Secondly, we think that it is essential for a true understanding of what is happening in the region nowadays to have a look to the roots, to the origins of the Zionist irruption in Palestine more than a hundred years ago, when the process of judaization of the land and forced displacement of native Arab peasants began. That is, the very same politics that are devastating Palestine in our times.

THE BOOK

Previously published in Arabic, Farsi, English and French, Palestine, a Modern History (the Spanish edition) –which will likely include the explanatory subtitle “The Impact of First Zionism according to Original Sources, 1900-1939”– is a masterwork by Abdul Wahab Kayyali, founder of The Arab Institute for Research & Publishing in Beirut and one the leading scholars of the Palestinian diaspora throughout the 1970s of the past century.

The fruit of his doctoral research, the book provides a thorough and fully documented analysis, and also a highly readable one, on how the Arab native population of the area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea experienced the irruption of the Zionist political movement and its political agenda. By reading the abundant original sources collected by professor Kayyali, which introduce us to the very beginnings of the Arab native resistance against Zionism, some conclusions can be drawn about such a resistance:

• It began on very early stages, as shown in a detailed analysis written in1911 by local journalist Najib Nassar, “Zionism: Its History, Aims and Importante”, quoted by Kayyali and already exposing the fears of the native population after the first years of Zionist politics.

• It was widespread throughout the whole geography between Jordan River and Mediterranean Sea, in the countryside and in the city as well. The emerging Zionist politics aiming to judaize the land, the eviction of indigenous peasants and the boycott of Arab labour force were firstly harmful to local farming workers but rapidly affected the urban sphere.

• It was extremely lucid; e.g. by measuring the real consequences that the embedding of Zionism in the Arab heartland would have for the entire region and for the years to come; or by meticulously distinguishing from the very beginning between the Jewish local community and the highly politicized Zionist newcomers, a distinction to be found in a number of original texts drafted by local Arab leaders and provided by Kayyali.

• It lacked a unified, solid and progressive leadership to fight for the rights of the local peasants and workers and not for preserving the privileges of the traditional ruling classes (unfortunately the very same problem in nowadays Palestine), a flaw that was instrumental in the defeat of the Palestinian people at the hands of British and Zionist reasons of state.

For those still thinking of Zionism as a blessing brought to a land which was dying after centuries of neglect and oblivion –as stated in the Zionist mithology–, the reading of this book may be a sort of revelation: the disastrous effects of the Zionist political agenda to the lives of thousands of native Arab families; the fierce local opposition from the1900s onwards and virtually among all sectors of the indigenous society; British colonialism and its devastating –specially since 1917– collusion with Zionism; the Great Arab Revolt in 1936, ruined by a classist and regressive Arab leadership, and repressed to blood and fire by British and Zionist joined forces…

All this and much more in Palestine, a Modern History (the Spanish edition), an essential account by an essential historian who pored over countless documents and original sources in Arabic, English and Hebrew to gift readers with a masterwork.

A masterwork buried three decades ago. Let’s dig it up together

Our deep gratitude to professor Johnny Mansour from Haifa for providing us the pictures above
