The Syrian Uprising

On March, 2011, galvanized by the Arab Spring, hundreds of thousands people took to the Syrian streets to reclaim democratic reforms, civil rights, freedom.

The dictatorial Bashar al-Assad’s regime, inherited from his father, responded with utter brutality. First, the city of Daraa took the worst part, but soon the demonstrations spread all over the country, having their own tall of Assadist criminal repression.

Thousands were murdered. Some took arms to defend their families and communities. Most remained committed to nonviolence.

Thousands of activists went missing in Assad’s prisons. Thousands died in custody or were tortured. The Caesar Report thoroughly documented the heart of darkness beating in Assad’s dungeons.

In spite of being arrested, tortured, murdered, in spite of being besieged, starved and bombed on a daily basis by Assad forces, hundreds of thousands anonymous people started building a civil society. In Daraya, Homs, Idlib and many other Syrian towns hundreds of locally elected councils emerged.

For the first time in decades, a wind of real democracy blew across Syria.

-- For a better understanding of the Syrian uprising and the essential role played by the Syrian civil society, we fully recommend this book:

Enab Baladi: Citizen Chronicles of a Revolution

On January, 2012 a handful of Syrian women and men from Daraya launched Enab Baladi, a weekly newspaper that has been published every Sunday to date, with a sole stoppage on August, 2012 when Assad forces slaughtered hundreds of civilians in Daraya and destroyed Enab Baladi’s office.

Enab Baladi was founded and is run, written and distributed by ordinary Syrian citizens who have become, due to circumstances, chroniclers of the atrocities routinely perpetrated by Assad’s regime against Syrian civilians. Women and men who have risked, and sometimes have lost, their own lives to inform the world about the massive scale of Assad’s crimes.

Women have always been an essential part of Enab Baladi, even being its main pillar at times. Its most renowned face is Kholoud Waleed, you can see her in these video and interview.

The book

Syrian voices have been massively silenced in regard their own Revolution.

In Syria, they have been silenced by the brutality of a heinous regime which has resorted to the entire catalogue of human aberrations to uproot such voices.

Outside Syria, they have been silenced by the overwhelming indifference of the international community, and also by the permanent appeal to all those Western “experts” who explain Syria from their offices and laptops and who never allow Syrian voices, God forbid, to challenge the unblemished result of their analytical disputes.

With this crowdfunding campaign we aim to listen to Syrians. And we also want others to listen to Syrians. For this reason, we want to make a book telling the story of the Syrian uprising through the citizen chronicles published in Enab Baladi.

This book:

Enab Baladi Book

Texts will be selected by Enab Baladi editors, who will pick the most significant pieces published by Enab Baladi’s citizen journalists.

This selection will be a 70-80% of the book, being the other 20-30% devoted to articles telling the own story of Enab Baladi. If possible, we would like such articles to be also written by Enab Baladi staff.

From the beginning, the book will be freely available online. Totally free to read, download, upload and distribute online. We will also print paper copies.

How the money will be used

If we raise 6000 Euros, we will be able to make an edition in English.

If we raise 8000 Euros, we will be able to make an edition in Spanish.

If we raise more money, we will spend it in further promotion of the book and additional hard copies.

- 1/3 of the funds raised will go directly to Enab Baladi. It is highly important that they keep publishing, and we want to contribute.

- 1/3 will be for paying translations. We want to publish the book in English and Spanish, the two most spoken languages of the world apart from Chinese. If we do not get enough money, the English edition will be prioritized.

- 1/3 will help to physically make the book (design, layout and printing), promote it as much as we can and sending paper copies to contributors. Promotion is essential for reaching a vast number of readers. We aim to organize speaking tours and presentations for Enab Baladi editors to share their first-hand accounts and experiences.

Who we are

My name is Sergio Pérez. For the last 9 years I have been running Bósforo Libros, a tiny Spanish publishing house focused so far in the question of Palestine.

From now on, Bósforo should become a platform for all those Syrian voices struggling against the genocidal tyranny which is destroying Syria after having held her hostage for more than 40 years.

Please email me for any question: bosforolibros@gmail.com

Many thanks for your support.

IMPORTANT:

Please be aware that this is not a page to enjoy special offers or bargain prices, but to fully support Enab Baladi newspaper and the very making of a book. Our main concern is to allocate as many funds as possible in order to achieve these goals.

At the same time, we want all people donating to this project to get at least one hard copy of the book in recognition for their contribution.

Please remember that it will also be freely published in the internet.

We just can thank you for your understanding and empathy.
