Help Us Help Gaza: Palestinian Emergency Psycho-social Helpline

Sawa Organization is currently working in emergency mode, operating our psycho-social Helpline all day and all night to provide support to children and their families across bomb-stricken Gaza. We are also working with our large network of friends and partners in Gaza to refer families and individuals to working humanitarian and emergency services in their areas. This is in addition to our ongoing support to victims of sexual, domestic, and other types of violence all over the oPt.

The power system in Palestine is not very strong; electricity may be interrupted without warning, as a result of technical failure, Israeli military actions, bad weather, etc. Sawa has decided to purchase and install a generator so that we may reman available even if power fails. During difficult times, a greater number of people always call on Sawa for a supportive listening ear, making constant and reliable Helpline operation particularly important.

When we began this campaign before the current war, it was in the knowledge that back-up electricity would be a vital safeguard in a crisis situation. Since then, the Palestinian Territories have seen a sharp increase in tension, violence, uncertainty--in particular, the devastation of the war in Gaza, which has affected mainly civilians.

Sawa has experience in supporting victims of war violence, and we draw on this knowledge now to do our jobs as best we can. Twice before, in 2008-9 and in 2012-13, we expanded from working 16 hours a day to 24 hours in order to give psychosocial support to Gazans suffering the Israeli attacks during these periods. Recently, in late 2013, an unexpectedly bad snowstorm stopped normal daily life, endangered the safety of many Palestinians, and drove some from their homes. Widespread electricity cuts made this time even more difficult, and also shut Sawa’s Helpline down for a day and a half.

During the current crisis, Sawa strongly urges the Namlebee community to assist the Helpline to be prepared to generate its own electricity if necessary.
This will allow Sawa to always be there for the most vulnerable members of our society.

Who We Are:

Sawa’s Call Center (the 121 Helpline) is a free national line (30 lines in all) providing support and psychological, medical, and legal guidance for women, youth, and children, who have experienced any form of violence, abuse, or neglect. We have operated since 1998.

In addition, the program provides counseling through e-mail, and accompaniment services to hospitals or the police for victims of physical, sexual, or psychological violence, and referrals to specialized organizations. We also offer face-to-face counseling at our center for some cases.

Caller information is anonymously documented in an electronic database for case follow-up, needs assessment and project planning, and advocacy and awareness efforts. Sawa addresses and documents about 2,000 cases each month, most of them women, youth, and children (74% under age 21, over 60% female, and 63% from Gaza). The Call Center is staffed by intensively-trained counselors.

How the Money Will Be Used:

Our first goal is to raise 5000 euros toward the purchase of the generator, whose total cost is 9675 Euros. Installation and testing will cost a further 290 Euros, and the accessories, cables, and connectors needed for installation will cost 435 Euros. So, our optimal and final goal is to raise 10,400 Euros.

Sawa’s 121 Helpline is a free national line providing psycho-social support to women, youth, and children who have experienced any form of violence. In order to be able to help those who need it at all times—including times of war or emergency—Sawa has decided we must be able to generate our own electricity.

Sawa Organization

Sawa is a Palestinian NGO working to end violence against women and children. We accomplish this through awareness-raising and education on several fronts, willingness to confront taboos, and providing confidential, rights-based psycho-social support to victims, and to those suffering from other problems.
