FAQS

What does ‘crowdfunding’ mean?

Crowdfunding –or collective microfunding– means collecting small economic contributions from many people to reach a sum of money (or funding goal) that will make a certain project to come true: Mary gives 10 euros, Amira 15, Takeshi 40 from Tokyo 40 (many thanks, Takeshi)… and so on, step by step until the total amount needed for the project is gathered.

Perhaps the most attractive aspect of crowdfunding lies in its truly collective and interactive nature. Not just the projects get the money to go ahead, but all that support comes from a participatory, horizontal, informed and defiant strength which endorse the projects with a high critical sense. That is, all is coming from you.

What is a creator?

A creator is someone who decides to publish a project in namlebee in order to raise the funds for making that project possible.

Even in collective projects the creator will always be a single person, responsible of the project before its contributors.

What is a contributor?

Any people contributing money to a project.

Why does namlebee just welcome projects related to political and social issues?

Because it is there where we want to be and grow. Just looking at the cold benefits, we cannot compete with other generalist platforms, but things are like that. We like what we are doing, just blowing in some sails.

What are you getting from this? Are you doing it for free, are you philanthropists?

Not at all. Not enough zeros in our account to be philanthropists… This platform is expensive to build and maintain, and we devote so much time and energy to it.

When a campaign succeeds, namlebee takes a five per cent of the total money raised by it at the platform. When a campaign fails, namlebee takes nothing.

Unlike other platforms, namlebee assigns a tenth part of its benefits to the Honeycomb, a sort of help fund for projects experiencing difficulties to meet their funding goals.

What is the Honeycomb?

The Honeycomb is a sort of moneybox or help fund offered by namlebee to give a hand to projects that are experiencing difficulties to reach their funding goals. When a campaign is successful, namlebee will take a five per cent ot the total amount raised by the project and will assign a tenth part of this percentage to swell the Honeycomb.

Sometimes a project is getting less contributions than expected and its funding goal seems too far. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the project has no interest for the people. Maybe the spreading campaign is not so strong, or maybe the project wasn’t explained in a good enough way, or maybe it coincides with other very similar projects in namlebee, etc.

The total amount gathered in the Honeycomb will always be on display for everybody to see. When this amount is considerable, namlebee will break the Honeycomb to help some project(s) in need of it.

Is it not immoral that namlebee is operating with banks?

Namlebee operate with banks because we don’t know another way to undertake this project. When there are no real and viable alternatives to allow us to genuinely and freely choose how and who operate with regarding money, ‘morality’ vs. ‘immorality’ issue becomes a pointless one.

Namlebee operate with Kutxabank. Although we do not believe in the so-called “ethical banking” –which is an oxymoron to us, like “cold fire” or “Israeli democracy”–, the fact is that Kutxabank has supported a number of projects for excluded and disadvantaged population, especially immigrants, and even for the sake of Saharawi people.

However, if you think that the so-called “Social programs” promoted by banks is just a makeover show, a marketing strategy or perhaps a mechanism exposing that something not far from a guilty consciente overflies the offices with swivel chairs, we namlebee agree with you.

Who are you?

Sandra Barrilaro, a photographer, has also worked in the publishing arena and in polar trips world.

In the technical part, Alfonso-Marcos Vidal do O, web designer and front-end developer with experience as a freelance designer and UX expert at big companies like Oracle, Telefonica and Accenture and Antonio Daza Sánchez.

What does ‘namlebee’ mean?

‘Namle’ is an Arabic word meaning ‘ant’, while ‘bee’ is a well known English word; so ants and bees, namlebee … Not a prodigy of inventiveness, but it has a symbolic charge and sounds quite well to us.

Is it free to publish a project at namlebee?

Yes, totally free.

What kind of project can I publish at namlebee?

Any project being a “socially and/or politically defiant” one; that is, any project adhering to one or more of values like alternative economics, free culture, human rights, environmentalism, gender equality, antimilitarism, indigenous struggles and the like.

Could you provide examples of “socially and/or politically defiant” projects?

A documentary about environmental activists threatened by landlords; a dystopian graphic novel on a corporations-controlled world; a scientific project not focusing on big companies but on human beings; a theatre play created by or for socially excluded population; a research on a forgotten historical episode occurred in your village; a cinema festival on antimilitarism; recovery of deteriorated buildings with socio-cultural aims; setting up a free library with political books; organizing a libertarian seminar; setting up a democratic/alternative school; a barter project in your neighbourhood…

The list seems endless. Shape your own project and tell us.

Who can post a project?

This platform primarily aims at ordinary people and small groups, grassroots organizations and independent media across the world and sharing a similar worldview. Small NGOs are also welcomed.

If you have a project that would shoo Angela Merkel away and have no money to develop it, namlebee is likely to be your website.

How do I submit you my project?

It is very easy. Just click the Launch my Project buttom and follow the instructions.

What does ‘funding goal’ mean?

It is the total amount of money needed for your project to be achieved.

Is there a minimum or maximum for a funding goal?

Minimum 500 euros. There is no maximum.

What does ‘campaign’ mean?

It is the period set by the creator(s) of a project for publicly raising money at namlebee.

How long does a campaign last?

The campaign owners (or creators) must choose between 40 or 80 days to raise the money needed for their projects.

While shorter campaigns are more intense and reach higher peaks of contributions, longer campaigns allow to spread the projects during more time in case the funding goal is a quite high sum of money.

What does ‘if my campaign succeeds’ mean?

A successful campaign is one that has reached or exceeded its funding goal.

What does ‘perks’ mean? Could you provide examples?

To encourage contributors, creators can offer the so-called “perks”, that is, benefits for contributors in exchange for their economic support: discounts, objects, acknowledgements, a thank you, services, events and others. [Needless to say, you can’t offer money nor illegal things as a perks]

Perks are proportional to the contributions: by contributing 10 Euros, Liz will get X; by contributing 20 Euros, Oscar will get X + Y; by contributing 50 Euros, Omar will get X + Y + Z; and so on.

When a campaign ends succesfully, that is, it has reached or exceeded its funding goal, creators are obliged to comply with the perks established by themselves during their campaigns. If the campaign ends without reaching its funding goal, perks are automatically cancelled.

Although perks stimulate contributions, we don’t want them to become the core idea for crowdfunding a project in namlebee, due to the very nature of this platform.

That is why we recommend a maximum of 5-6 perks by project, that is, perks for 5-6 different levels of support (for example, 10, 20, 40, 80, 150 and 300 Euros, or any other amounts established by the creators). Anyway, if you would like to offer a wider range of perks you can do it for sure.

IMPORTANT: When deciding the funding goal of your campaign, remember that perks will generate additional costs for you. When setting the different levels of perks, we highly recommend you to roughly calculate those costs and add them up to your funding goal.

That is, if your project needs 3000 Euros and complying with the perks will take an extra amount of 500 Euros, your funding goal should be in fact 3500 Euros. At your project page in namlebee you can specify that 500 Euros of your funding goal will be assigned to meet the perks.

What are the most important things to think about when preparing my project?

1) First of all, establish your funding goal: how much money you need and for what.

2) Describe in a clear way what your project is about. Be brief and precise. Long texts can make the people tired and stop reading.

3) Establish the perks. Think carefully about this. If your campaign is successful, you must carry out all perks offered in your project page at namlebee. So, remember that perks will generate additional costs for you. When setting the different levels of perks, we highly recommend you to roughly calculate those costs and add them up to your funding goal.

4) A video introducing your project is highly recommended, since it will boost your chances of being successfully funded. It is much better for the creators to appear in the video, but especially shy creators can also use drawings, pictures, etc, or to leave the performance to other people. No need for a professional video.

IMPORTANT: You all know about the mess on copyrights, so be aware of it if you are going to include music, illustrations, etc. in your videos.

How are the contributions to my project made?

When someone wants to contribute money to your project, (s)he must go to your project page at namlebee and choose an amount of money. Then (s)he will proceed through the payment gateway of Kutxabank. Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards are accepted.

We partner with global experts in online payments to ensure all the contributions at namlebee are processed securely.

Is it possible for a project to receive contributions by other means than namlebee?

Yes, it is, but remember that all money raised by other means than namlebee does not count for getting your campaign closer to its funding goal. Campaigns at namlebee are “all or nothing” ones, so try to include all the financial support you receive in your campaign at namlebee.

If my campaign is successful, how will I get the money and how much will I get from the total amount raised?

If your campaign ends successfully, that is, it has met its funding goal within the expected time frame, namlebee will transfer this money to the creator’s account except for:

- A 5 per cent taken by namlebee;

- Fees taken by the bank for using its payment gateway. These fees depend on the amount contributed:

  • Until 23 euros: 0,30 Euros for every contribution

  • From 24 euros: a 1,30 per cent of every contribution

  • [Bank fees are the same for local and international contributions].

The refore, when someone contributes 100 Euros to a project the creator gets 93,70 Euros.

And there are no additional fees for transferring all the money to the creator’s account?

For accounts based in Spain: 1,5 Euros.

For accounts not based in Spain: 30 Euros.

This amount is taken by Kutxabank and will be discounted (just once, of course) from the total sum transferred.

What if I don’t reach my funding goal?

In this case you get no money at all. If you need 5000 Euros to develop your project and just 4500 are raised (just an example), your campaign has failed and nobody gets any money, nor the creator of the project, nor namlebee.

If I don´t reach my funding goal, what happen with the contributions already made by the people?

When a campaign fails, that is, it does not reach its funding goal within the time frame established by the creator, the contributions fully return to the contributors.

Is it possible for a project to receive contributions after reaching the funding goal?

Yes, it is possible to raise money until the campaign comes to an end, even if it has already reached its funding goal. That extra money might be used by the creators to expand or improve their projects by developing additional aims.

Can I cancel my campaign at any time?

Yes, you can cancel your campaign at any time unless it has ended. Contributions will fully return to the contributors.

What if after running a successfully funded campaign my project cannot be accomplished?

If by any circumstances and after meeting its funding goal a project can’t go ahead, the creator will also have committed, by accepting the Terms of use of namlebee, to return all the money raised through this platform or be subjected to legal actions by the contributors and/or by the platform itself.

Will there be a follow-up of the succesfully funded projects?

By accepting the Terms of use of this platform and by posting their projects in it, the creators commit to carry their projects out once their campaigns at namlebee have successfully ended and raised their funding goals. Moreover, they commit to do it within the time frame set by themselves at the beginning of their campaigns.

After their campaigns successfully end, the creators will periodically publish updates in their project page at namlebee until their projects can be considered totally achieved.

How will I manage my campaign?

Once your project have a green light from namlebee, we’ll give you access to your project page, where you can post all the contents related to your campaign in namlebee. What you publish there is what every user of namlebee will learn about your project.

Can I edit my project after being published at namlebee?

Yes, you can edit your project once it has been published, except for the funding goal and the perks already chosen by contributors.

If you are going to make an important update, do not forget to inform your contributors in your updates section at namlebee.

Once my campaign is over, will I be allowed to enter my project page?

Once your campaign is done, you will still have access to your project page to post updates and reply questions by your contributors, but you cannot edit your project.

How will the people learn about my project?

Spreading the projects is a key element for a campaign to success. People who doesn’t know your project cannot contribute to it.

Namlebee offers to creators tools for spreading and sharing their campaigns by emails and in the social networks.

In addition, from their project page at namlebee the creators will be enabled to respond –also in real-time if they wish– any question formulated by contributors and people interested on the projects. Interaction should be a basic element of your campaign. Try to make the most out of it.

Spreading the word that a campaign has started in namlebee basically depends on the creators. From the first day to the very last one of your campaign be dynamic, make sure that everybody in your inner circle have learnt about it and try to widen that circle as much as you can. It will work.

Given the nature of this platform and the very nature of your own project, don’t forget independent media (local radio stations, alternative websites, etc), which maybe will find that your campaign deserves attention if you let them know about it.

Can I publish two projects simultaneously at namlebee?

No, you must wait for your campaign to end to submit a new one.

Can I publish my project in namlebee and simultaneously in other crowdfunding website?

No, you must wait till your campaign at namlebee is done before publishing it in other websites.

If my campaign fails, can I try it again at namlebee?

Yes, you can, but you have to wait at least 6 months. In that time, try to assess why your campaign has failed and change what you want. No matter if you just make minor changes, you will need our green light again to post your project.

Can I publish a project in namlebee no matter the country I am?

    Yes, you can.

Does namlebee gain any legal right over my project by using this platform?

Not at all. The creators keep all rights over their projects before, during and after their campaigns.

How can I contribute money to a project?

It’s very easy. Just go to the page of the project you are interested in. On the right side, click the buttom of the amount you want to contribute. Then just follow the steps to proceed with the payment, which will be totally safe through the payment gateway of Kutxabank. Visa and Mastercard credit or debit cards are accepted.

Remember that your contribution will be returned to you when the campaign of the project you have supported has ended without achieving its funding goal.

Can I cancel my contribution after making it?

Yes, you can cancel your contribution and get your money back at any time unless the campaign has ended or it has reached its funding goal.

However, before cancelling your contribution please remember that, no matter how small it is, it can mean a big difference for a project since namlebee is an “all or nothing” crowdfunding platform. Projects not reaching a 100 per cent of their funding goals get no money, even if they get a 99 per cent of their funding goals.

Is my contribution tantamount to a “purchase”?

No, it isn’t. When you contribute money to a project via namlebee you don’t buy anything, nor even the perks offered by the creators of the projects. Contributions made via namlebee are –or they should be– of a mainly disinterested nature. Money is contributed out of moral, ideological or/and artistic affinity for the sole purpose of boosting a project.

The perks offered by the creators of the project are just that, incentives or small compensations for the creators to thank the funders of her/his project. Funding a project mainly thinking on rewards does not fit the philosophy of namlebee, surely nor your own philosophy.

Notwithstanding, since the creators accept the Terms of use of this website before posting their projects, they undertake to fussily carry out the perks as published during their campaigns in namlebee.

How much money can I contribute to a project?

Minimum 10 euros. There is no maximum.

Can I contribute money to projects based in other countries? Bank fees are not raising?

Yes, you can. Namlebee is an international crowdfunding platform and payments from almost any country are accepted.

Fees do not increase for international payments, so the creators will get the same amount of money as if you were locally contributing.

If I contribute, let’s say, 100 euros to a project, ¿what amount will the creator of the project exactly get?

When a campaign has succesfully ended, namlebee transfers all the money raised by that campaign to the creator’s account except for:

    - A 5 per cent taken by namlebee; and

    - Bank fees for using the payment gateway of Kutxabank. These fees depend on the amount contributed:

  • Until 23 euros: 0,30 Euros for every contribution

  • From 24 euros: a 1,30 per cent of every contribution

  • Bank fees are the same for local and international contributions.

Therefore, when you contribute 100 Euros to a project the creator gets 93,70 Euros.

The account related to my credit or debit card is not in Euros, is it a problem for contributing money at namlebee?

Not at all. The payment gateway will convert your payment into Euros without charging any additional fees.

    What does ‘perk’ mean?

That is why we recommend a maximum of 5-6 perks by project, that is, perks for 5-6 different levels of support (for example, 10, 20, 40, 80, 150 y 300 Euros, or any other amounts established by the creators).

Who is responsible for delivering the perks to the contributors?

The creators are. Namlebee is not delivering any perks nor has any responsibility in that delivery, which is a commitment taken by the creators to reward her/his funders.

Is there any follow-up of the succesfully funded projects?

Yes, there is. By having accepted the Terms of use of this platform, the creators are committed to develop their projects after raising money through namlebee and within the time frame established by themselves.

So, all the creators of succesfully funded campaigns must inform their contributors about the progress of their projects until these are fully accomplished. They will do it by periodically posting updates in their own project page at namlebee.

Do I get my money back after contributing to a project that didn’t meet its funding goal?

Yes, you get all your money back.

What happen with the contributions when a project is cancelled after being succesfully funded?

In this case, the creators must return to their funders all the money gathered via namlebee. Otherwise, since they will be breaking the Terms of use of this platform they will be exposed to potential legal actions taken by the contributors or by this platform itself.

I want to help by spreading a project: how do I do it?

Even if you cannot contribute money to a project, you can help it a lot by spreading it as much as you can.

Use the bottoms at the project page to share it in the social networks or email it to your friends.

Moreover, if you are working for independent media you can contact the creators and tell them about your idea of diffusion. You can write to them from their project page at namlebee.

Can I contact the creator of a project?

Yes, you can write to her/him from her/his project page at namlebee.

Do I gain any right over a project by funding it?

No, you don’t. The creators keep the rights over their projects before, during and after their campaigns in namlebee.

Why I cannot contribute via Paypal?

PayPal fees are too high. They take a 3,4% + 0,35 euros per transaction, that is, about three times more than the banking payment gateway available at namlebee. Therefore, using Paypal as an option of payment would mean that the creators would get quite less money for every contribution, and this is why PayPal is not available on this website.

Is it safe to contribute money through this platform?

Contributing money via namlebee is totally safe. Contributions are made by credit or debit card through the payment gateway offered by Kutxabank, which meets all the security protocols and international standards, emphasizing on anti-fraud measures.

Namlebee doesn’t have access to the contributors’ credit card details, which are fully managed by the security protocols of the bank.

How will I learn if a project that I funded meets its funding goal?

We will email you. Moreover, the creator will also contact you for potential perks to be sent.

Do I have to register to use this website?

You can browse all the projects without registering. You just have to register when you want to post your own project or when you want to contribute money to a project.
